Our
Story

The registered charity, Anfoega Association, together with its sister organisation Dzadikuma Association, developed from informal gatherings and meetings in the late 1970s and early 1980s. These were held in the homes of the late Mrs Grace Darkah Abotsi (Da Grace), the late Mr Theodore Yawo and Mrs Cecilia Anoma, and Mr and Mrs Ziga, across Seven Sisters in Tottenham, Bermondsey and Streatham in South London.

At the time, Anfoega citizens living, studying or working in London and other parts of the UK would visit these homes to eat, drink and enjoy light entertainment. The hosts were known for their warmth, kindness and generosity, often cooking for guests and entertaining them with jokes and ‘toles’. This genuine hospitality led to the gatherings becoming more regular and increasingly popular. From these meetings, conversations emerged about forming a formal association for Anfoega citizens in the UK, which led to the creation of Ngoyiyi Habobor in the early 1980s under the chairmanship of the late Mr Theodore Yawo Anoma. As membership expanded, Ngoyiyi Habobor evolved into the Anfoega Association around 1985 and was later registered as a UK charity on 14 November 2002.

Following its formation, Da Grace, the Anomas and the Zigas continued to host Association meetings in their homes for several years. In the early days, before the availability of money transfer and door-to-door services, members often volunteered to carry money, equipment and other essential items back home during their travels, supporting both the Anfoega Traditional Council and the Anfoega Hospital. In more recent years, the Association and its members have continued this tradition of giving by donating items such as digital blood pressure machines and bedsheets to the hospital. During the COVID-19 pandemic, members also organised and sent PPE and other vital supplies to support the Anfoega Hospital.
